Maldives Weather and Climate

Thanks to its warm tropical climate, the Maldives is a year-round holiday destination. With consistently high temperatures, warm ocean waters and plenty of sunshine, the islands offer excellent conditions for beach holidays, water sports and other outdoor activities throughout the year.

Although temperatures remain relatively stable, the Maldives has two distinct monsoon seasons that influence weather conditions: the northeast monsoon and the southwest monsoon.

Northeast Monsoon: December to April

The northeast monsoon generally brings the driest and sunniest weather to the Maldives. The period from December to April is considered the dry season, with February typically being one of the driest months of the year.

During this season, visitors can expect plenty of sunshine, calmer seas and lower rainfall, making it one of the most popular times to visit the islands.

Daytime temperatures usually reach around 31°C, while nighttime temperatures average approximately 25–26°C. The sun shines for about eight hours per day on average.

Because the Maldives consists of small islands surrounded by the Indian Ocean, refreshing sea breezes help make even hot days more comfortable, while evenings remain warm and pleasant. Temperatures vary very little throughout the year.

Southwest Monsoon: May to November

The southwest monsoon usually lasts from mid-May to November and brings more rainfall, stronger winds and occasionally rougher seas. Rain showers can be heavy, but they are often followed by periods of sunshine.

Despite the wetter conditions, the Maldives remains a popular destination during this season. The weather is still warm, and visitors can often enjoy sunny days between tropical showers.

The Maldives is located close to the equator, where severe tropical storms and cyclones are relatively uncommon. However, weather conditions can vary between different islands and atolls.

The Maldives: A Year-Round Destination

With warm temperatures throughout the year, the Maldives is an excellent destination in every season. The best time to visit depends on your preferences: the dry season is ideal for sunshine and calm seas, while the wetter months can offer fewer crowds, lush tropical scenery and excellent opportunities for certain water activities.

Whether you are planning a relaxing beach holiday, diving adventure or romantic escape, the Maldives offers tropical weather and warm ocean waters all year round.
